I would say that unless you need something that only comes in a desktop (like massive graphic rendering capabilities for playing games, or the ability to drive multiple huge screens or something), then the laptop is the way to go.

I have had laptops constantly since about 1993, and I commonly use them as my desktop machine at work as well. It's easy enough to hook up to external screens, keyboards, and mice. And then it's basically no different than a desktop.
