| License Keys - Prompting when attempting to add second instance to SQL 2008 Cluster Hi all, We've built a two-node active/passive cluster of SQL 2008. Everything seemed to be working fine. We wanted to add a second clustered instance, but when we proceed through the steps it prompts for a Product Key and will only install the Evaluation or Express edition without it. As far as I recall, the first installation did not require any key. I am able to install a standalone instance on one of the cluster nodes, and it seems to work without the key. Anybody have any clues what's going on? Thanks,

| Hellow, Please, could you have a look on this link ? How to: Create a New SQL Server Failover Cluster (Setup) I have found this "On the Product key page, indicate whether you are installing a free edition of SQL Server, or whether you have a PID key for a production version of the product. For more information, see Editions and Components of SQL Server 2008." and this : "You must specify the same product key on all the nodes that you are preparing for the same failover cluster." Don't hesitate to post again for more help or explanations. Have a nice day

| Hi, That did not seem to help, unfortunately. We were able to install "Standard" edition with no product key, the first time. We did not need to enter any key. The second time we were prompted for a key, and were not able to proceed unless we either entered it, or chose to run Enterprise Evaluation, or one of the other free editions. Any other ideas?

| Hi all, WHat I noticed is that if you are "slipstreaming" SQL Server 2008 SP1 and overwrite the PID that comes with the installation media (at least in my case), it will install Enterprise Edition Eval. You need to use a PID because GUI or command line, you get prompted. I've done enough cluster installs at this point to see the behavior. So check your installation media source to see if the PID is there or not. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Allan Hirt Blog: Allan Hirt's SQL Server Blog | Musings from the world of HA and beyond Author: Pro SQL Server 2008 Failover Clustering |
