Default Debit or Credit cards?

If you don't have a card as of the moment and you are contemplating what to get; what would you rather have? A debit card or a credit card? I personally would prefer to have a debit card for use in online transactions as well as to use in my everyday use. It would lessen debt and even give lesser problems because it will only make you to spend to your means. What do you think?

I personally prefer a debit card, since I would tend to overspend with a credit card. Also a debit card is more secure. Since I live in Guatemala, I prefer security over flexibility, I have been robbed several times since I moved here! A credit card can be a big hassle if it is stolen and the thief manages to use it before you can cancel the card, which is often the case with pickpockets since you donīt notice the missing card for a while.

I also prefer debit cards as it can limit my spendings to the money I have. I really hate it when I overspend. It shows that I am irresponsible, I also don't like the thought that I'm in debt.
