Let's start posting interview questions and if possible answers too, which would help the freshers out there to have a preview of how questions will be asked in the top companies...

Here are some excerpts from an interview attended by one of my friends in a very big IT company

1. A train goes from stations A to B. One day there is a technical problem at the very beginning of the journey & hence the train travels at 3/5 of it's original speed and so it arrives 2 hours late. Had the problem occured after 50 miles had been covered, the train would have arrived 40 min earlier(i.e., only 120-40 = 80 min late). What is the distance between the 2 stations ?
   
   
   
2. My husband's age contains the same two digits as my age but in reverse order. The difference between our ages is 1/11 of their sum. Also, my husband is older than me. What are our ages ?
   
   
   
3. There is a certain 5 digit no.
   a) it contains two primes.
   b) third digit is highest.
   c) second digit is lowest.
   d) fifth digit lies between first & second digits & is half of fourth
   digit.
   e) first digit is more than the sum of fourth & fifth digits.

4. A solid cube whose external surface is painted red, is cut into 27 smaller cubes by 6 straight cuts. How many of these small cubes have:
   a) 3 red faces
   b) 2 red faces

5. There is a tank which has 2 taps & a waste pipe. The two taps fill the tank individually in 10 min and 15 min. The waste pipe empties the tank in 7.5 min. If both the taps as well as the waste pipe are kept open, when(if ever) will the tank fill ?
   
   
   
6. There are 2 cats of which at least 1 is male. What is the probability that both cats are male ?
   
   
   
7. A person drives from city x to city y at const speed for 2hrs. then
   tyre punctured .10 mins for change .Increases speed.Reaches 30 mins
   late. had the puncture occured after 30 miles he would have reached
   just 15 mins late.

8. A man has to get air-mail. He starts to go to airport on his motor
   bike. Plane comes early and the mail is sent by a horse-cart. The
   man meets the cart in the middle after half an hour. He takes the
   mail and returns back, by doing so, he saves twenty minutes. How
   early did the plane arrive?
   
   
   
9. There are three different boxes A,B and C. Difference between
   weights of A and B is 3 kgs. And between B and C is 5 kgs. Then what
   is the maximum sum of the differences of all possible combinations
   when two boxes are taken each time.
   
   
   
10. I lost Rs.68 in two races. My second race loss is Rs.6 more than
    the first race. My friend lost Rs.4 more than me in the second race.
    What is the amount lost by my friend in the second race?

Solution for 5 question:

Tank fill in = (1/10)+(1/15)-(1/7.5)
= 0.03333


So tank can fill in 30 min.

1) Product of Prime Numbers between 1 and 20.
Ans: 9699690

2) Number of terms between 1 and 999 not divisible by 8 or 12.
Ans: 793

3) An apple seller is having some apples. He is selling half of the apples he has + half an apple to the first customer. The same way he sells the remaining apples to 7 customers. After selling to 7 customers, he has no more apples. Find the total number of apples.
Ans: 127


4) In the possible of combinations of 2,3,6,7 how many numbers are divisible by 4.
Ans: 8

5) There are number of urns and number of balls. If 3 balls are placed in each urn, then 3 balls are left. If 4 balls are placed in each urn then 1 ball is left. What is the total number of balls?
a) 12
b) 18
c) 21
d) None of these.
Ans: d (Correct answer – 9 balls and 2 urns).

I lost Rs.68 in two races. My second race loss is Rs.6 more than
the first race. My friend lost Rs.4 more than me in the second race.
What is the amount lost by my friend in the second race?

Solution:

Let us assume
X- First race
Y- Second race

Y=6+X
X+Y=68
X=31 and Y= 37

So My friend lost amount insecond race was 41

Q-1: 4 men can cross a bridge in 3, 7, 13, 17 minutes. Only two can cross the bridge at a time. The time taken by the two to cross the bridge is equal to the time taken by the slowest person of the two. Find the minimum time for all of them to cross the bridge

Ans: 41 minutes

Q-2: Two trains are traveling at a speed of 60 km/hr on the same track towards each other. When the distance between them is 18 km, a fly starts flying between them at a speed of 80 km/hr. Find the travelling path distance of the fly up to the point when it is going to get crushed by the two trains?

Ans: 12km

Q-3: A batsman gets out for 23 runs in an innings which increases his average from 15 to 16. What must have been his innings score to reach an average of 18?

Ans: 39


Q-4: There are 1997 doors in the cave. 1997 people came out from each door. One door is closed. The remaining people come out from each door. This continues till a single person comes out of a single door. Find the number of people inside the cave.

Ans: 2656678995 (1997 * 1998 * 3995/ 6)

Q-5: I was married 10 years ago. My wife was the sixth member of my family, now I have a baby and today my father died. The average age of my family is same as it was 10 years ago. Find my fathers age when I was married.

Ans: 60 years

Q-6: It takes 5 minutes to pass a rumor from one person to 2 other persons. The tree of rumor continues. Find how many minutes does it take to spread the rumor to 768 persons.
1) 47 ½ 2) 50 3) 5000 4) 500

Ans: 2nd option - 50

Q-7: There are 9 coins. One of the 9 coins is less in weight and others have equal weights. Find the minimum number of balances to find the defective coin?

Q-8: Three birds cross a point at the same instant with equal speed. Two of the birds fly exactly in opposite direction. After they cross the point at any instant of time the three birds are joined by straight lines to form a triangle. The nature of the triangle is

Q-9: A secret can be told only 2 persons in 5 minutes .the same person tells to 2 more persons and so on . How long will take to tell it to 768 persons ?

Q-10: Four Members A,B,C,D are playing a game .A person losing a game should double the amount of others .B,C,D are losing in order after three games .The amount after 3 games are A&B having 40,D is having 16&C 80.

wife's age =45

Difference is 9 which is 1/11 th of the sum 99
