First step is to run good antivirus & antispyware scans. If you don't find any infections, then it's time to see what is hogging your memory, or if your hard drive is approaching capacity.

Hope that helps!

For spyware scanning i recommend a-squared or adaware. Even Windows defender would do the job. AVG is a good anti-virus, but if you need an alternative, try Avast! Try defragmenting your Harddrives, if you hav'nt done it for a long time. There can also be some application hogging up memory, so its better to check what all applications start automatically on boot-up.

Yes I too suggest defragmenting. I do it regularly. Its like sending my PC to a gym. It keeps my PC as well as its speed fit & fine. My pc runs like a cheetah!

I use a couple anti-spyware apps on a regular basis, as no one sinle app seems to catch anything. I also run WinPatrol, which notifies me anytime a program tries to add itself to my start-up applications.

You should run Adaware... or a tool which is something like Spybot - search & destroy - they both are really good ones, seem to catch almost all spyware on my PC.

You may need to tell us your configuration then. Xp struggles with anything less than 512MB ram. You may need to disable certain windows services like indexing and maybe even system restore if you dont use it .

Sorry to sound like a broken record of everyone else, but i'd reccomend a good virus scan and spyware, get yourself a nice firewall even just to be safe. Once you have done all that run a disc clean up and then defragment. Should see a great improvment in your computer speed and stability. If it is still slow, maybe it is time to consider an upgrade?
