LAN Name Resolution different from Internet

Hi,


I have a Windows Server 2003 acting as a DNS, and an Exchange Server 2003. My Internet connection is through a standard ADSL Router.

My mail domain name - mail.company.com - has the correct internet MX records and this points to my router. The router has a Virtul Server setting which redirects packets to my Exchnge Server and everything works fine for any Internet traffic, OWA, ActiveSync etc.

However from my LAN mail.company.com points to the router and the router doesnt redirect the packets to the Exchange Server, and in fact IE will open up the router configuration pages. This makes logical sense as my DNS has no entry for mail.company.com so it redirects the request to the Internet DNS which returns the IP Address of the router etc.

I think that the solution is to add a DNS record to my LAN DNS pointing mail.company.com at the LAN IP Address of the Exchange Server, so any computers using this DNS, i.e. those on the LAN get the LAN IP Address of the Exchange Server and computers on the Internet get the IP Address of the router.

However when I set up mail.company.com on my LAN DNS the addresses ftp.company.com etc, IP Addresses that need to remain pointing to the Internet IP Addresses all get lost.

My question is therefore, what sort of DNS record do I need to add to my LAN DNS Server so that only mail.company.com is provided by the LAN DNS and and *.company.com lookups are redirrected to the Internet DNS.

Hi,

Try setting this up as an CNAME record, just an alias that points to the real name of the sever. This should only point mail.company.com to your internal IP and the rest will still point to the internet IP. mentioned CNAME will do the job for you and make sure you point it to internal IP .

I have to put the CNAME into a ZONE, so presumably I have to create a ZONE called "company.com" to then put the CNAME "mail" into, but if I do this all my other name mappings for *.company.com are lost because the DNS doesnt forward them to the internet DNS.

Where do I put this CNAME, forward lookup zone, reverse lookup zone, and then in what actual ZONE? Wht sort of ZONE should I create, if I need to?

I'm sorry if Could you give me more details of how to implement this.

Hi,

For the internal Domain, are you using the same structure as the external. What I mean is, my internal domain is mycompany.local with my external being company.com. This makes is more difficult for me to setup what you are proposing, i have not found a solution. If you are using the same domain internally as externally, then you should have little to no issues with setting up the CNAME record and pointing it to either the FQDN or IP of the target computer. This would want to be setup under the normal Forward Lookup Zone that you have configured for the domain.

Yes but my company.com domain is all managed by external providers. I could map the few IP Addresss in on my local DNS, but I dont really want to because I have had situations before where locally the web site all looks ok, but externally (not using my DNS) it is mapping incorrectly and had problems with the external web sites because of this.

I am just surprised that the LAN based Microsoft DNS hasnt got some sort of setting to say, "yes this particular name "mail.company.com" I know the IP Address for but this other one that is in the same domain (company.com) I dont know so I had better refer that outside to the Internet like normal". In fact I'm not surprised, I am 95% confident that this can be done if I knew how, this must be so common, I feel everybody must have the sme problem.

My internal domain is webbedsolutionslimited.local and my external which is managed by third parties is webbedsolutions.co.uk.

Hi all,

I just set up a new zone with the name mail.company.com and pointed it all at the mail server, and put an blank CNAME record in that. It comes up and says (same as parent folder) in the name and works fine.
