Default booting problem

Hi all,
I have a debian OS (x86) on an IDE-HDD with / partition mapped on /dev/hda2 and with boot flag set.
Now i am shifting this disk to a new system with better hardware (memory,core2duo) and BIOS too which has support for SATA and IDE disks. Right it doesnt have any SATA drive fixed this disk with debian OS. Now it doesnt recognize the boot parition on the IDE-HDD i suppose, and is stuck with error:
"No bootable device, insert boot disk and press any key"

But when I boot off the GnuParted Live rescue CD, it gives me an option at grub menu to boot from the MBR it found after scanning. if i choose that option, it OS boots fine.

can someone tell me whats going on and what could be the fix ?

Thanks

hello satheesh,

There are many possibilities and is a tad hard to predict what is going
wrong.
What I normally do is boot the Debian rescue CD and load the kernel and
reinstall grub. That worked for me (TM).

But you will have to fight with it till it works.

Good Luck

The above message looks like it is from bios and not from grub.
Please check in your bios if ide-disk is part of the bootable devices.

The notion has changed from hda to sda in the recent versions. That could be
one problem else you are not connecting the hard disk as slave of Primary
IDE controller.

Please inform the result if you are successful

Try changing your first boot device to IDE harddisk (IDE1 ?).
This should be a problem of not having the correct bootable device in BIOS.

i sugest that you need to check the DVD rom and HDD configuration, because your motherboard may not have 2 IDE ports, you need to set the HDD as master and DVD rom as Slave
