Default Team System Installation Order for Visual Studio 2008 and SP1

Team System Installation Order for Visual Studio 2008 and SP1

I installed:

VS2008 and MSDN from

VS2008\SW_DVD9_VStudio_Team_Dev_2008_English_Core_ MLF_X14-26382.ISO

VS2008SP1 from

VS2008SP1\VS90sp1-KB945140-ENU.exe

MSDN SP1 from

VS2008SP1\VS2008SP1MSDNENUX1506188.iso

TFS Client from

SW_DVD5_Visual_Stdio_Foundatn_Svr_2008_English_Cor e_MLF_X14-26513.ISO

I then thought I would update the TFS client stuff from
VS2008SP1\TFS90sp1-KB949786-ENU.exe

However, it gave me the message:

"None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup."

So, I have three questions:

0) Is there a better place to post this question?

1) How do I get my Team Explorer Client updated to SP1, given the order I already installed things in, and

2) What is the proper order to install these things? Just move the TFS Client Install to before installing VS2008 SP1?

Thanks,

Hi,

The scenario where VS2008 SP1 has been installed before the TFS Client is installed is not a corner case - it is not going to be a rare occurrence. In such a case, the user will have to install the client piece from the TFS Server disk set. However, this leaves them with a down-rev TFS client. There must be a reasonable way to proceed in order to get the current client.

Hi

TFS90sp1-KB949786-ENU.exe is for TFS AT tie, build agent and TFS proxy. No need to install it on the client computer.

Hi,

Thanks for the response, Yes, I know that. However, as you can see from the version numbers in my original message, I am missing the SP1 fixes for the Team System client.

That is the crux of my question: How does one get the fixes if they install VS2008 SP1, and then the Team System Client? Is it safe to rerun the SP1 install? Do I have to re-format the disk Or What?

Hi,

As you said, I noticed several hotfix related to Team Explorer haven't been installed from your first post. I think the safest solution is to run Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack Preparation Tool to remove the installed SP1 component and install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 again.

Hi,

Thanks, I went ahead and tried that method, and all seems well. Here is the guide I am passing on to my team:

When installing Visual Studio 2008, VS2008 SP1, and Team Explorer, it is important to install them in a particular order in order to obtain the latest versions of all components. The reason for this is that the Team Explorer updates are part of the VS2008 SP1 update.

NOTE: If you have already installed VS2008 SP1, and you have Team Explorer installed, ensure that Team Explorer is at the SP1 level, using Visual Studio’s “Help, About” menu item. If it is, you are done. If not, continue with the next paragraph.

If you do not currently have Visual Studio 2008 installed, skip to the next paragraph. If you do, you need to start by running the VS2008 patch removal tool:

VS2008-PatchRemovalTool-x86.exe

then, skip to the Team Explorer installation.

If you have not already installed Visual Studio 2008, install the next item:

VS2008 and MSDN using the product DVD.

If you have not yet installed the Team Explorer, install it with the next item:

TFS Client from the Foundation Server DVD.

Finally, you can install the service packs:

VS2008SP1 from

VS90sp1-KB945140-ENU.exe

MSDN SP1 from (NOTE: MSDN SP1 install is only needed if it is not already at SP1)

VS2008SP1MSDNENUX1506188.iso
