Team Suite and TFS Installation

We have downloaded En_vs_2005_vsts_180_Trial.img, en_vs_2005_tfs_trial.iso for 180 days trial versions. Now we need information about installation of Team Suite/TFS.

Which one should be installed first and how?

The VS_2005_VSTS image is the client side portion of Team System called Visual Studio Team Suite. In contains Visual Studio 2005 with a mryiad or additional functionality added to it. You can get great improvements in quality and producivity as a standalone developer using Team Suite. A Team System edition of Visual Studio comes with a license allowing you to connect to a Team Foundation Server.

The VS_2005_TFS is Team Foundation Server (TFS). TFS is a new server product that was introduced with Team System. It has a brand new (and enterprise class) source control system integrated with a work item tracking repository and a portal collaboration system. You'll need to download a SQL Server installation to be able to install Team Foundation Server as it uses that for storage (though when you purchase TFS you get a SQL Server license included). Because all the data storage for your development process is now stored in a SQL database Microsoft have shipped a datawarehouse and set of reports that give you a great view on what is actually going on in your development process. The TFS CD also contains the client code necessary to install into you Visual Studio version to allow it to talk to TFS. There is also a third party client to TFS that allows Java developers to also talk with the server product (from the company I work for called Teamprise).

TFS rquires a server to live on and is an involved set-up process (you have to read the manual). The easiest way to evaluate the products is to download a Virtual PC Image containing TFS and Team Suite pre-installed - this is available to MSDN Subscribers.

So in answer to your question, you are best to install the Team Suite disk first on your client machine and then find a server to install TFS. You can then install the TFS client software onto your client machine that you'd previously installed Team Suite.

So VS2005 Professional Edition should be on client machine or not required?

We are planning to evaluate TS with Load Agent and TFS for load and performance test of our .NET2.0 application (ASP.NET, C#, SQL2005 Server to be deployed in 4 tiers e.g. DB Server, App Server, Web Server and Clients ). DB servers are clustered for Fault Tolerance(2 node active/passive), App and Web servers are network load balanced in DMZ.

Our objective is to load test and measure/analyze the pages response times, transaction time at different tiers.
