Default Import TFS 2005 projects from one server to a clean TFS 2008 install on another serve

Hi All,

Is there a way to import TFS 2005 projects from one server to a clean TFS 2008 install on another server?

I've found a few whitepapers on upgrading TFS 2005 to TFS 2008, so in the worst case scenario I could install TFS 2005 on the target server first, then migrate from the 'old' server to the new one, and then upgrade the new server to TFS 2008.

But I was wondering if it's possible to migrate from one server to another without first installing TFS 2005 on the target server.

Hi Satheesh,

During the 2008 installation you can point the install to a database containing the 2005 data - this would cause the installation to perform a data upgrade during the installation which would allow it to work with 2008.

Please make sure that you are only performing this operation on SQL data that has been properly backed up. The installation process will perform schema changes that cannot be rolled back. A complete working backup will be necessary to recover in the event of a failure.
