Please help - I am going around and around in circles in my head..

I'm just after some simple explanations….and yes I've tried Google and Wikipedia, but I'm just confused..

Confirmation testing is making sure that the bug detected has indeed been fixed. Does this mean that your confirmation testing should be done in your live system or in your development area? Or both?

Maintenance testing is retesting the system as a whole after you have made changes, to ensure that no new areas have been infected? BUT….isn't that what Regression Testing is?

OR! Is Regression testing what you do in your development area and Maintenance Testing is what you do in your live system?

Eek! Thank you for any help or advice you can give me. I'm sorry if this is all dull and old hat to you all.. I'm still coming to grips with things.
