Default Browser Compatibility

I've noticed that there are sites who cannot be displayed properly in different browsers. If the layout is right when you open the site on IE, it appears differently on firefox. How can you make your site compatible to all types of browsers?

The neverendiing question such the early days. You just design and preview in each browser. As they are now closer than ever before differences still occur. Right now IE7 lags with CSS adaptibility. It can drive you crazy.

Yeah, that's an age-old problem. A lot of which seemed to stem from Microsoft's inability to follow guidelines and standards in their browsers. Some might say that they've been a motivating factor for the expansion of web technologies. But I tend to think of them as being a big part of the problem.

A couple of things that you can do to try to be compatible across browsers:

• keep your designs simple
• test thoroughly in all the browsers you can, and then address issues individually.
• use Flash, which generally displays the same in all browsers (because they all use the same Flash Player technology)

But it will probably always be somewhat of a problem, since there are more browsers available today than ever before, and I'm sure there are more to come.

That is a definite issue I've run into as well. You have to test it in several types of browsers, and I recommend using different computers with diff. resolutions as well. It gives you an idea of what folks are seeing when they find your space.

Yeah, as people said here, just test it in all browsers you can think of.

And don't use complicated scripts that might not be supported by all browsers.

Simply, in the designing process you should check the site's layout in all browsers you can and fix the problems you may have to make it look good in them. If that's not possible, I'd offer different versions of the site for the most popular web browsers.

I remember using a site in the past that allowed you to check your site and get screenshots of how it appeared in the popular browsers. Does anyone remember the URL for this?

Major web browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. the version 5 of opera is very popularand its has been allowed to compete on an equal footing with IE and Netscape with a banner-ad supported freeware release.
As browsers have developed and they have supported the various web standards for HTML, DHTML, Javascript and XML to a differing degree !

Good list Darsh but I would add Safari to the list, particularly now due to the iPhone.

I would add Firefox to the list of major web browers. I would also add that firefox is superior to the others listed.

Yes! Oh goodness, of course Firefox as well. I use Firefox for my main browser all the time, I don't know why I didn't think of it. Firefox has more market share right now than Netscape.
