Default Screen Resolution

For which screen resolution do you consider while designing websites. I develop my websites considering resolution 1024 * 768. Is there any way to do it for any resolution?

For html there is a code but resizing plays havoc with design and content. Many sites are changing to a 1024 look but the most popular and highest traffic sites are in 800.

When I design fixed-width sites, I like to make them about 750 pixels wide, but centered. You really need to take into account people running 800x600 (seems really small, I know). It is really bad when you have to scroll horizontally on a web page.

And even though 1024x768 is the most common screen resolution (last time I checked), it's also bad to assume that people browse with their windows maximized, so leave some room on the sides.

But the ideal thing to do is design a site that scales to the window (like this site does). Not all content works well with that, but it's the best way to go if you can do it.

I am not a big fan of fluid designs barring forums themes, having said that I had previously designed all my websites for 800x600 res but now I am thinking of switching it all to 1024x768 since majority of the traffic I get has a screen resolution of 1024x768 or grater.

I usually design in the middle. I design my site, and then center it so that it fits in 800 x 600 and above that.

I think 1024x768 is a good screen resolution for designing websites, since most of people today use Windows XP and default resolution is that. However, you can offer other display options for your visitors too.
