I designed my all flashsite from scratch.

My first CSS site was from a template

My second was inspired by a template.

I collect templates and save interesting web pages. It gives you ideas and helps you learn.

I guess for me I go both ways. I do prefer templates though because it gives me a foundation to build off of but I also like to slowly take apart the foundation to create a unique site that had been originally based on a template.

I hope that makes sense.

On my personal experience, a commercial website template can help web developers who have a good knowledge in PHP, MySQL for example and who need to build an appealing website for a client.

Website templates are offering developers some kind of "style guide". Thus, even web developers who do not have any design skills can build a great website.

I used a free template. I looked through hundreds before I found one that I thought was "right" but it's worked well for me.

Cool Re: Free templates or coding on your own?

coding my own. i feel great whenever i create my own.

although downloading and re-uploading free templates would be more practical and much easier. but somehow, it doesn't feel right.

also, there is not any template that soothes my taste 100%.
there'll always be something that's missing.

that said, i prefer creating my own style.

I have created my own templates. I do like other website setups and woudl liek to copy their format on my own. When I see something I like I usually get a book and try it on my own.

annerz, I agree, I never find a template that's "quite right", but I don't really have the skill to do my own, so it's convenient for me.

I think free templates can be a great start to a site, but hopefully over time you will continue to make improvements. I have some sites where I started with a template and it evolved to something greater.

I created a template of my own but I personally felt it to look horrible, later on I started downloading good templates that is the best way I feel to get good templates.

I think that I would prefer downloading it then I would do some modifications to personalize it. I like the idea of having a skeleton first because it is easier then to create one yourself.

you can download some free templates from the net and if you are good to make a template then go for hand making template and take inspiration from them.

thanks
